THE WRITTEN WORD was important at Qumran. The implements for scroll preparation and copying found within the settlement—including this ceramic inkwell—as well as the presence of the Dead Sea Scrolls in nearby caves suggest that the inhabitants of Qumran were responsible in some way for the scrolls.
