HUNT FOR PAPYRI. “The flow of papyri soon became a torrent,” recalled Grenfell, who, with Hunt, began to excavate the ancient Egyptian city of Oxyrhynchus in 1896. Looking for literary works of classical antiquity, the two Englishmen were soon to realize that a vast majority of their finds would consist of public and private documents. Among these fragile treasures were also some of the oldest New Testament manuscripts.
