JERUSALEM IN PHASES. These plans show the general layout of Jerusalem through its phases of development with a focus on the Northwestern Hill: (1) Jerusalem during the lifetime of Jesus in the first century A.D., (2) Aelia Capitolina between 135 and 325 A.D., (3) Byzantine Jerusalem between the fourth and eleventh centuries, and (4) Crusader Jerusalem. The lighter gray fortification line is the 16th-century Turkish wall that also makes up the present wall of the Old City.
