THE GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION of stepped pools and chalk vessels (map shown here) reveals that the two phenomena manifested along distinct cultural lines. They appear unambiguously in areas of Jewish settlement. Is it because the use of these pools and vessels was directly linked to Jewish ritual purity laws?
