COURTESY OF THE HUNGARIAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL MISSION TO MACHAERUS

ACCORDING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT, along with Josephus’s writings, John the Baptist was beheaded at the desert fortress of Machaerus by Herod Antipas. A column (shown here) has been reconstructed in the royal courtyard at Machaerus under the direction of Győző Vörös, head of the Machaerus Excavations and Surveys.
