JERUSALEM’S THIRD WALL was begun by Herod Agrippa I, according to Josephus (War 5.148). In 2016, Israeli archaeologists claimed to have found portions of the wall northwest of the Old City. The nearby site of the Tomb of the Kings likely served as a quarry for the new fortification project. Jean-Baptiste Humbert of the École Biblique suggests that Herod Agrippa later had the clearing adapted for his resting place, which was symbolically aligned with the gate of the Third Wall and the magnificent Temple built by his grandfather, Herod the Great (map shown here).
