JEAN-BAPTISTE HUMBERT

LEFT BEHIND at the foot of the monumental staircase leading down to the Tomb of the Kings, these large stone blocks were cut but remain undetached. This and other unfinished features of the funerary complex suggest that the tomb was never fully finished. The arched opening in the southern wall leads to a ritual bath (mikveh); two more entrances in the eastern, staircase-facing wall (not visible here) lead to another, much larger mikveh. The entrance to the tomb’s courtyard is in the northern wall, hidden from this view.
