KING HEROD AGRIPPA I ruled Judea and Samaria from 41 to 44 C.E., by the will of the Roman emperor Claudius. He is remembered in the Book of Acts as being responsible for the death of the apostle James and for the arrest of the apostle Peter (Acts 12:1-4). Although he avoided putting Claudius’s portrait on coinage, Herod’s image appears on coins minted in Caesarea Maritima, such as this bronze coin from the seventh regnal year of his tetrarchy over northeastern Judea, i.e., 42/3 C.E. According to Jean-Baptiste Humbert, at Herod Agrippa’s death, his unfinished tomb (the Tomb of the Kings) was appropriated by Queen Helena of Adiabene. His final resting place remains unknown.
