CONTRIVED CURSIVE. A ligature is the cursive combination of two or more letters. This pseudo-Moabite inscription has seven ligatures (see outlined letters). Although ligatures are known in the later Nabatean script, they are unattested in Old Hebrew. Their appearance in Moabitica, such as this inscription, hints at the inscription’s forged nature.
