FASCINATING FLOOR. Incorporating 58 stone tiles and fragments, the proposed geometric design may have once decorated the main hall of the opus reticulatum building at Banias. Known as opus sectile (“cut work,” in Latin), such intricate mosaics were a regular feature of monumental, ceremonial, and elite buildings in the early Roman period, including Herod the Great’s Third Palace at Jericho.
