Eyes uplifted, Constantine the Great appears to gaze upon eternity. This eight-foot-high remnant of a colossal marble statue of the emperor was once enthroned in the apse of Constantine’s basilica in Rome. The statue is dated to about 330A.D., long after the Mulvian Bridge victory in 312 A.D. that precipitated Constantine’s conversion to Christianity.
