Moses hides his face from God, who commands him from within the burning bush (Exodus 3–4). Following God’s instructions, Moses would go on to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt and would help define their faith by a covenant between God and the Hebrew people made at Mt. Sinai.

This colorful scene, designed by Raphael and painted by his pupils between 1517 and 1519 or 1520, decorates the second story of the Logge, an immense gallery in the Vatican. Another 51 frescoed episodes from the Old Testament and the Gospels line the gallery’s vaults, giving the ensemble the informal name of Raphael’s Bible.
