Jerusalem, God’s chosen city, with its majestic, fortress-like walls and fabled spires, is a frequent poetic motif in the psalms.

“Go round about Zion, encircle it,

count its towers.

Note its ramparts,

scale its bastions,

So you may recount

to the last generation:

That this God, our God, for ever and ever.

He will lead us evermore.”

(Psalm 48:13–16)
