Saint John the Baptist. In the Hebrew text of Matthew, John the Baptist appears as a much more important character than he does in the Greek Matthew. The enhanced stature of John the Baptist is but one of several theological differences that distinguish Shem-Tob’s Hebrew Matthew from Greek texts of Matthew. This 16th-century engraving is by the Paduan artist Guilio Campagnola.
