Ahasuerus Hears the Annals
(Esther 6:1–2, 6–9)

“The king could not sleep that night so he gave orders to bring the record book, the daily record; and they were read to him. And it was found recorded there that Mordecai had given information about Bigtan and Teresh, the two royal eunuchs who had guarded the threshold and who had plotted to assassinate King Xerxes.

When Haman entered, the king said to him, ‘What should be done for the man whom the king especially wants to honor?’ [Thinking the king was referring to him] Haman said to the king, ‘All right. Have them bring a royal robe which the king has worn and a horse the king has ridden, one with a royal crown on its head. Then have one of the king’s most noble princes robe the man and have the prince lead him on horseback through the city square, proclaiming before him, “This is what is done for the man whom the king especially wants to honor!” ’ [But the king was referring to Mordecai.]
