Angels descending to the daughters of men, by John Flaxman, c. 1821–26. Inscribed “Enoch” in the bottom right comer, this pencil drawing shows the “Sons of God” flying down to earth, each one pairing up with a specific mate. Flaxman evokes the decision of the Sons of God: “Come, let us select wives from the progeny of men, and let us beget children. … Then they took wives, each choosing for himself. … (Enoch 7:2, 10).
