More like embroidery than stone carving, Ben Shahn’s Tablets of the Law bear ten Hebrew letters—the first of each Commandment— in two vertical columns. Entitled “Decalogue,” this 1961 serigraph with hand-applied gold leaf is one of many works by the American painter, printmaker and calligrapher that incorporate the Hebrew alphabet.
