Penetrating several layers of a scroll, the destructive force, whatever it may be, leaves behind corresponding shapes of damage (see arrows) in each layer. When the scroll is unrolled, these corresponding shapes form a periodic pattern of damage. The example shown here is the scroll of The War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness, from Qumran Cave 1.
