Profuse erotic art, much of it more explicit than this wall-painting from the “House of the Epigrams,” adorns many of the ruined buildings in the Roman city of Pompeii. Buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D., Pompeii exemplifies the lascivious Roman ethos for which Paul offered an alternative.
