Gutenberg Bible. Dragons, flowers and exotic birds and vines embellish an illuminated page from the Book of Proverbs. The Latin text is a recension, or critical revision, of the Vulgate prepared by biblical scholars in Paris in the 13th century.

The text of this Bible was printed in Mainz, Germany, between 1450 and 1456 by Johannes Gutenberg, then decorated by hand. The famous Gutenberg Bibles are the earliest extant books printed with movable type.
