A ripe red pomegranate (see next photo) and figs (shown here) are both fruits harvested at summer’s end in Israel. They recall the fourth vision of Amos— a basket of ripe fruit. The Hebrew word for ripe fruit, qaµyis, is echoed in Yahweh’s statement that the end, qeµs, has come for Israel. Thus, says author Richardson, the ripe fruit symbolizes this end. But, continues Richardson, the end is not final; a renewed Israel is implied.
