ON THE COVER: David plucks his harp in a traditional scene on the opening page of an illuminated Hebrew Psalter. Bold and decorative, the first word in Psalm 1, Ashrei, framed at center, evokes its full line: “Happy is the man who has not followed the counsel of the wicked.” Part of a 15th-century, Italian miscellany in the collection of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, this Psalter portrays an old, kingly David in a bucolic landscape.
