J. Limburg/Dessins Pour La Bible

Three of Six Sketches by Marc Chagall (1887–1985) of Jonah are shown in this article. The first (shown here, compare with next photo) gives the prophet specific features. This is appropriate: The author of Jonah wanted readers (or listeners) to regard Jonah as a particular individual, a contemporary of Amos and Hosea and a successor to Elijah and Elisha. Indeed, rabbinic tradition identifies Jonah with the child restored to life by Elisha in 2 Kings 4.
