Back on the road To Nineveh. Jonah, staff in hand, sets out to complete his mission in the third of six sketches by Marc Chagall. Jonah does so somewhat grudgingly: He says only five words (in the Hebrew) to his audience, warning the Ninevites of impending destruction. Despite its brevity, the message has the desired effect; everyone from the king to the animals of Nineveh puts on sackcloth and repents. The city is saved. As for Jonah, God has yet one more lesson—about compassion—to teach the beleaguered prophet.
