The Prophet Elijah brandishes his sword in triumph over one of the slain prophets of Baal. The statue, on the grounds of the Monastery of Elijah at Muhraka, commemorates Elijah’s contest pitting the powers of the God of Israel against the Canaanite god Baal, as described in 1 Kings 18. God’s victory achieved, Elijah instructs the people of Israel to take the defeated prophets of Baal into the valley below the western slope of the Carmel, there to be slaughtered.
