The Samaritan passover. A blazing fire heats this stone-lined pit (shown here, compare with photos of Passover sacrifice) all afternoon in preparation for the roasting of the sacrificial lambs offered at Passover, the celebration of God’s deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt. These pit ovens, called tannurim, measure about 6 feet deep and 4 feet wide. A second tannur appears at upper right in this photo.
