A leper beseeches Jesus to cleanse him in this engraved illustration of Matthew 8:1–2, taken from a 19th-century Bible. The artist strove to accurately portray the account in Matthew by depicting the leper kneeling (in contrast to many other portrayals of this incident) and by placing the action outside a city (the account in Matthew omits mention of a city, whereas Luke 5:12 places the event in a city).
