Rest stop. Kuntillet ‘Ajrud, a late-ninth century B.C.E. pilgrimage site, sits atop a westward-pointing plateau in the northern Sinai. Professor Cross suggests that the locales in Moab and Midian, supplemented with sites leading to Egypt listed in Numbers 33 and Deuteronomy 10 as sites through which the Israelites passed after having fled Egypt, may have been pilgrimage stations much like Kuntillet ‘Ajrud.
