The pagan prototype. A classical river deity in a typical pose—reclining, jovial and half-naked-fills the lower half of this Roman relief. Paris and Helen, the legendary personages from the Trojan War, appear in the upper half. The panel today decorates Rome’s Palazzo Spada, a palace built sometime after 1540 and now the location of the Italian parliament’s upper house.
