A forlorn Job, the work of the French painter Leon Bonnat (1833–1922), might well be uttering the words of Job 3:3—“Perish the day on which I was born, and the night it was announced, ‘A male has been conceived!’”

The suffering Job is not typically linked with Cain in the minds of Bible readers. But author Joseph Klein shows that the two faced similar moral dilemmas, differing in their responses to divine abandonment.
