Christ the King and his angelic court reign in this splendid mosaic in the nave of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, in Ravenna. Jesus, typical of contemporary imperial portraits, wears royal purple and sits on a jeweled throne. Numerous regal images decorate the church where kings worshiped and held court ceremonies.
