“Listen Israel,” cry the tablets of Moses, as depicted by the French artist Philippe de Champaigne in his 1663 painting of “Moses Presenting the Tables of the Law.” Fortunately the people of Israel—or at least those of France—will have no trouble “hearing” this message, conveniently translated into French and written in large type on large slabs.
