Tamar gives birth to twins in this illumination from the 13th-century Codex Vindobonensis. The names of Tamar’s sons derive from the circumstances of their birth, suggesting that she named the boys, but the Bible does not say so. For Savina Teubal, the power of naming/creating—the special province of mothers—is often edited out of the Bible.
