Covering about 180 acres, Dura contains the best-preserved ancient church and baptistery, with some of the earliest extant Christian paintings; a lavish synagogue with an elaborate series of biblical paintings; and temples dedicated to Mithras, Zeus, Bel, Adonis and other deities.
