“An oasis of paintings springing up from the dull earth,” excavator Clark Hopkins described the discovery of the Dura synagogue with vibrant biblical scenes covering its walls. One of the city’s largest buildings, the synagogue abutted Dura’s western wall (as shown in this drawing).
