“Not my will but yours be done,” Jesus prays to God in the Gospel of Luke. In Luke, and in this oil painting by the Italian artist Andrea Mantegna (1431–1506), Jesus serves as an example to Christians by submitting completely to God.

In Mantegna’s painting, a troop of cherubim appear in the sky to support Jesus during his fated conflict with the soldiers streaming out of Jerusalem.
