“An angel from heaven”—referred to first in Luke’s account of the Agony (Luke 22:44)—comforts Jesus in this painting by the Danish artist Carl Heinrich Bloch (1834–1890). Luke mentions the angel’s presence even before describing Jesus’ suffering, thereby ensuring that his readers would not take Jesus’ agony to heart: All is unfolding according to God’s plan.
