James Henry Breasted, Battle of Kadesh

As this drawing indicates, the basic plan of Ramesses’ camp was reproduced in reliefs at other Egyptian temples (compare with color reconstruction of a detail from the reliefs at Abu Simbel). This drawing, which represents a portion of one of the reliefs at Ramesses’ Luxor temple, captures many of the details depicted in the Abu Simbel reliefs. In both cases, for example, Ramesses’ pet lion rests near the center of the Egyptian camp, while on the other side of the pharaoh’s tent, Hittite spies are being beaten by their captors.
