Dating to about 425, this plaque is one of four in the British Museum that once formed the sides of a small ivory box (compare with painting of “Christ on the Cross”). It depicts, from left to right, Pilate washing his hands, Jesus accompanied by a Roman soldier, and Peter denying that he knew Jesus, as a rooster, at upper right, begins to crow.
