“My lord and my God” (John 20:28), Thomas calls out when he is invited to put his hand in the wounds of the risen Jesus. Having missed Jesus’ earlier postresurrection appearance to the disciples, Thomas insists he will not believe until he puts his finger in Jesus’ nail marks and his hand in Jesus’ side. This painting by Bernardo Rosselli (1409–1464) is from Florence’s Church of Santo Spirito (the Holy Spirit—thus the dove imagery).
