Ancient dye vats (shown here) containing crushed Murex shells testify to the presence of the dye industry at the Phoenician site of Tel Dor. It is likely that snails were first cultivated in artificial pools (rather than being fished from the ocean); holding pools with channels leading to the sea to ensure fresh seawater have been found at several sites.
