Piero della Francesca: The Legend of the True Cross

The legend begins with the death of Adam, in the top scene of the southern wall of the apse. This detail, taken from fresco 1 (on the plan, an outline indicates where the detail comes from), shows Seth planting a shoot from the Tree of Knowledge in Adam’s mouth. Centuries later, the fully grown tree will be used for Jesus’ cross.
