If you’re traveling to Naples during the hot summer months, arrive at the gate to the trail up Vesuvius by 9:00 a.m. when it opens. Unfortunately that is not early enough to miss the hot midday sun. Come prepared with hat, sunscreen and water, no matter what the hour. Once you start up the trail through the gate to the summit you will be able to buy water, but you’ll feel a lot better having it with you before you reach a kiosk.
