50 Years Flashback: 1972: Hershel Meets Hezekiah

During his sabbatical year in Jerusalem, BAR’s founding editor, Hershel Shanks, explored Hezekiah’s Tunnel for the first time and became fascinated by its history and archaeology. After starting BAR, he found many opportunities across five decades to feature the tunnel, including “Sound Proof: How Hezekiah’s Tunnelers Met” (September/October 2008) that presented novel theories on its engineering.
