NOBLE FEET. Fragments from nearly two dozen ancient Egyptian statues have been found at Hazor. Among them are the front paws of a sphinx, about 17 inches wide, identified by a hieroglyphic inscription as belonging to Menkaure (r. 2447–2442 BCE), the Fourth Dynasty king who had a pyramid built for himself at Giza.
