EGYPT IN CANAAN. At the Canaanite city of Hazor, archaeologists found two dozen fragments of ancient Egyptian statues, including this 5-inch-tall head of an unnamed Old Kingdom pharaoh, who wears a close-fitting, curly headdress topped by a uraeus, now broken. Clearly not local imitations but rather imports directly from Egypt, these statues span 12 centuries, depicting kings and officials from the time of the Giza pyramids to the age of Ramesses the Great. Why and how they ended up in the debris from the destruction of Canaanite Hazor in the late 13th century BCE remains a mystery, but archaeologists are beginning to unravel their story.
