EGYPTIAN CONQUEST. The Bubastite Portal in the Temple of Amun at Karnak records a military campaign to the southern Le-vant by Pharaoh Shoshenq I (biblical Shishak), the Libyan founder of Egypt’s 22nd Dynasty. Among the polities he conquered in c. 925 BCE was the city of Gezer. The relief features a group of Asiatic chieftains (center bottom) squatting at the feet of the pharaoh, whose figure is almost entirely lost to the right. On the left, the god Amun-Re faces the pharaoh, holding ropes tied to personalized names of places under Shoshenq’s control.
