THE MYRRH-BEARERS. The Gospels indicate that a group of women came to the tomb of Jesus to anoint his body. In Mark 16:1, this group of “myrrh-bearers” comprises three individuals: Mary Magdalene, Mary of James, and Salome. Elsewhere, Mark identifies these three women as Jesus’s disciples (Mark 15:41), which indicates Salome’s prominent role in the early Jesus movement. In medieval art, such as this 14th-century work by Duccio di Buoninsegna, the “three Marys” (including Salome identified as “Mary Salome”) was a popular theme.
