For the past several years, BAR has awarded three dig scholarships to help volunteers go to Israel and participate in archaeological excavations. This year we received an unprecedented number of applications—over 50 of them. It became my privilege (and, it turned out, onerous duty) to select the winners. As I sat there reading them, I realized it was simply impossible to select only three as the best. So many of them were so good! I decided right then to add two scholarships out of my own pocket.
Having made that decision, I continued thinking about the problem. Why stop with myself? There were other people who had helped us financially in the past who might also be willing to support this dig scholarship program.
So I started telephoning. I soon found that other people were as enthusiastic as I was about the project. No one turned me down; most even funded more than one applicant. As one of the donors told me, it was as though I was selling Girl Scout cookies: “How could I say no?”
Here is the result: 26 dig scholarships. Below are the names of the generous people who have joined us in supporting this project.—H.S.
