Definition of “Archaiology”
In Samuel Johnson’s monumental dictionary, composed between 1746 and 1755, he defined archaeology (spelled “archaiology”) merely as “a discourse on antiquity.” Henry Hitchings, in Defining the World,a tells us that “in Johnson’s mind, and in the estimate of most of his peers, it [archaeology] was associated with the quaint antiquarianism of dilettanti, and was an amateur pursuit, not a science.” The science of archaeology did not begin until the 19th century.
